How to Repair a Sky Magic Eye System

How to Repair a Sky Magic Eye System

If you look at this web
page it will give you lots
of information on the repair
of a sky magic eye systems
Using tutorial and video
We also have the parts
you will need to carry out
an inexpensive repair to your
system at the bottom of this page.

Let's start by looking to
see if you have a Magic eye problem
or a cable connection problem
between the Sky box and the second TV.

If you have a Sky picture on
the second TV but cannot change
Sky channels with the Sky remote
control on the second TV then you
may have a magic eye problem -
SEE TOPIC 2

But if you have no Sky channels on the second TV

Picture of television screen showing no picture

then carry on reading TOPIC 1.

TOPIC 1

If you have no Sky pictures on the
second, this means there is a break
in the connection between the
sky box and the second TV.

The first thing to check is that the
cable that runs between the sky
box and the second TV has not
come out of the back of the Sky box.

If you look at the back of the Sky
box you will see an aerial connection
with RF2 marked on it.  This is the
output from the sky box to the second TV.

on the back of a sky box

So,if the cable has come out of the
RF2 socket, put it back in place.

If the cable is in the RF2 Socket,
the next thing to check the coax
connections on the ends of the
cable going from the sky box to the second .

You will find that the coax connector
that fits into the sky box on RF2
is a female coax connector.

Picture showing a female coax aerial plug

At the other end of the cable
between the sky box and the
second TV you have a male coax plug

Picture showing a male coax aerial plug

You will need to take the coax
plugs apart and check that none
of the braiding of the coax cable
is not touching the center core of
the cable,  as this will short the signal out.

If this is all OK it may mean
that the second TV has gone out of
tune.

Firstly, go to the TV with the
sky box on it and put a sky channel
on with a sky logo on it so you
know what you are looking for on the second TV.

a logo

To tune your second TV you will
have to go into the tuning menu
of the TV.  Please make sure you
have the TV set on the analogue
tuner as using the analogue tuner
is the only way you will tune in the
signal from the Sky box.  The sky
box signal will not tune in to the
second TV with a digital tuner.

You should find that when you go
into the tuning menu on you
second TV the auto tune should
run through until it hits the
sky channel and then stores it in its memory.

If you do all this you should get
your sky picture back on your second TV.

TOPIC 2

If you have Sky pictures on your second
TV But cannot change channel with the
sky remote control, This means that
your magic eye is not working.

If you look at the cable coming from
the sky box, you will see that
it fits into the magic eye.

Picture showing a magic eye

You will see a diagram below of
how the magic eye fits into
the cable from the sky box.

Picture of the set up of a sky magic eye

The next thing to look for is to see
if the red bulb on the magic eye is lit .

Picture of a sky magic eye
with bulb lit up

Picture of a Sky Magic eye working with
the 9 volts on

If the bulb is lit red then you
may have a faulty magic eye.
Change the magic eye and
this should solve your problem.

If the red light is not lit it could be
missing the 9 volts that comes
from the Sky box to work the magic eye.

To see if the 9 volts is getting to
the magic eye you will need a
small multimeter like the one shown below.

Picture of a voltage multimeter

You need to set the meter on DC
and put the probes onto the coax
plug going into the magic eye.  Put
the red probe onto the center pin
of the plug and the black probe
onto the side of the coax plug. You
should get a reading of 9 volts.  If
you do get a reading of 9 volts but
the red bulb on the magic eye
is not lit, change the magic eye.

If you do NOT get a reading of 9 volts
you need to test the other end of the
cable at the Sky box.
Pull the female
coax plug out of RF2 on the Sky box
and test for 9 volts on the RF2 socket.

read voltage on RF 2

If you have 9 volts at RF2 on the Sky
box, there must be a short or an open
circuit on the cable going to the second
TV.  So, change the cable between the
Sky box and the second TV.

If you do NOT have 9 volts coming
out of RF2 at the Sky box this means
that the 9 volts has been switched OFF
on a menu on the Sky box.

OK, now let's go down the road of
going into the sky box menu and seeing
if the RF2 9 volts is switched on.

There are three types
of Sky box.

The Black HD recorder Sky box

The Sky Plus box

And the Sky standard box

with the left and right arrows
on your sky remote

you then need to press the green
button on your sky remote
control .

This will save the ON settings and
turn the 9 volts on RF 2 on the back of the sky HD box

Please watch the video
below on how to
turn the 9 volts on using
the sky menu on a sky HD Box

Video showing how to turn the 9 volts on

When you put the probes of your multimeter on RF2 on the back of the sky HD box you now should have 9 volts DC

Picture of multimeter

If not then it could mean the sky HD box is faulty

Now lets show you how to turn the 9 volts ON
